WELCOME TO MARY E. GRISWOLD SCHOOL!
Mary E. Griswold School is located in the Kensington section of Berlin. Our school is named after Mary E. Griswold, a teacher, superintendent, and champion of education. She fought tirelessly for appropriate funding for education in order to expand the Berlin School System. Thanks to her, education has grown and has become a priority in our town over the last several decades.
As its mission states, Griswold School is committed to encouraging children to develop their potential as life-long learners. To this end, we will provide experiences that enable children to meet academic and social challenges with perseverance, confidence, sensitivity, and responsibility in order to make a positive influence on their world.
At this time, we have approximately 500 students in grades kindergarten through five. Our talented faculty collaborates to deliver a standards-based curriculum written to meet the needs of all students. In addition to the core subjects, we know that it is important to develop students" knowledge in the areas of art, library, music, physical education, and technology. We use computer laptops, mobile labs, Chromebooks, and iPads to enhance student learning.
Griswold School works to educate the whole child, develop responsible, respectful, and productive citizens, and prepare our students for the future. We want each and every student to soar. To that end, we encourage "bucket-filling" behaviors and have divided the school population into smaller school families that meet throughout the year to develop additional opportunities for students to connect with various adults in the school.
Parental involvement is a key contributor to the success of Griswold School. Our Parents Club is an active organization that funds enrichment programs and is instrumental in creating a strong school-family bond and a sense of connectedness. We encourage all families to attend the various Family Nights that are sponsored by the Parents Club.
Griswold School earned the distinction of being recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School in 1999. This is an award bestowed only to schools that demonstrate highly effective instruction, assessment, planning, leadership, communication, and parental/community involvement.
